Lightning Strike Knocks Out Lights at Tropicana Field, Causes Delay During Yankees-Rays Game

Around 8:53PM Monday night, at Tropicana Field, the Tampa Bay Rays had a 4-2 lead over the New York Yankees in the top of the 5th inning.  The Yankees had runners on first and third, with 2 out, and Robinson Cano at the plate with a 3-2 count.  Rays pitcher Alex Cobb throws the pitch, and...wait, what?

The YES network lost the picture, so the initial reaction by viewers may have been one of anger.  However, it turned out viewers didn't miss any action.  The lights on the field flickered as Cobb was preparing to throw his pitch, so the umps called time.  After 5 minutes, the YES network returned to show a bank of lights that had been knocked out, apparently by a lightning strike.

Here is a snapshot of the YES network coverage after returning from the power outage:

The Yankees managed to keep themselves entertained by playing around with the Rays mascot Raymond.

Note the irony of the Yankees-Rays game being delayed by weather, considering the fact that Tropicana Field is a domed stadium.

The total delay lasted about 15 minutes, after which the lights came back on and the Rays were back out on the field.  After all that, Cano grounded out to second base on the next pitch to end the inning, so no harm, no foul.
