Video: Mariners Fan Interference Takes RBI Away From Kyle Seager

The trend of fan interference continues in Major League Baseball.  On Tuesday night, a San Francisco Giants fan stole a pop fly ball from Cody Ross in AT&T Park.  Now, a Seattle Mariners fan at Progressive Field in Cleveland took an RBI away from a player on his favorite team.

It happened in the top of the fifth inning as the Cleveland Indians hosted the Mariners.  With runners on first and second, Kyle Seager hit a single down the right field line.  The ball traveled quickly and probably would have continued into the right field corner had it not been for a Mariners fan in a Ken Griffey jersey and a paper crown on his head who snagged the baseball with his glove.

That turned a play that could have been a triple into a ground rule double.  The Mariners runner on second base made it home safely, but the runner on first base who would have scored on the play, Miguel Olivo, had to return to third base after the fan's interference, so Seager lost an RBI.

Once the fan realized what happened, the fan felt as stupid as he looked with that paper crown on his head.  Unfortunately, feeling sorry doesn't change the fact that he forgot the rules, and naturally this fan had to be ejected for interfering with the game.

The Mariners won the game 9-2, so in the end, no harm to them.  Well, unless you account for that RBI that was taken away from Kyle Seager.

Note that this is the second time in a month where a Mariners fan interfered with a live ball.  Earlier this month Dustin Ackley was robbed of a triple by an overzealous Ichiro Suzuki lookalike.

Remember fans:   interfering with baseballs in the field of play will get you EJECTED FROM THE STADIUM.  People seem to be forgetting this.  Maybe the baseball parks need bigger signs?
