Home plate umpire hit in head by broken bat at Twins-Reds game (Video)

Home plate umpire Jerry Layne was hit in the head with a broken bat during Friday night's game at Great American Ballpark with the Cincinnati Reds hosting the Minnesota Twins.

The scary moment took place in the bottom of the fourth inning as the bat of Reds batter Devin Mesoraco broke as he grounded out to shortstop. The barrel of the bat hit Layne in the side of the head and he went down to the ground. The Reds medical staff and the other umpires ran to check on him immediately after the play.

Layne left the game under his own power, but went to the hospital as a precaution, where tests came back normal. Second base umpire Bob Davidson moved behind the plate for the remainder of the game.
