Buster Posey's RBI double wiped out for batting out of order (Video)

The San Francisco Giants suffered an embarrassing mishap in the first inning of Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers when they were busted for batting out of order, wiping an RBI double by catcher Buster Posey off the scoreboard.

After Posey batted third to knock Marco Scutaro home from third base, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly came out to home plate to challenge the Giants lineup. Mattingly brought a copy of the lineup card he received from Giants manager Bruce Bochy, which apparently had Pablo Sandoval batting third and Posey batting fourth.

After the umpires gathered to discuss the situation, they agreed with Mattingly and had to figure out how to clean up the mess. To sum things up:
  • Sandoval was called out for "batting out of order", even though he never came to the plate.
  • Marco Scutaro had to return to third base, wiping the run off the scoreboard.
  • Posey then had to bat fourth in his normal spot in the lineup (which effectively made it his second consecutive at-bat) during which he flew out to right to end the inning.

It's unclear how the Giants lineup mix-up occurred, but fortunately it didn't cost them in the end as they defeated the Dodgers 4-2. Hopefully the Giants can figure out what happened so that it doesn't happen again.
