James Shields spikes pickoff throw into the ground (Video)

Kansas City Royals pitcher James Shields spiked a pickoff throw to second into the ground during the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the New York Yankees.

Shields was attempting to pick off Yankees runner Brian Roberts at second, but had to adjust the throw at the last minute when he realized that no one was covering the base. As a result, Shields turned the pickoff throw into a "bounce pass" to shortstop Alcides Escobar with the spike, avoiding giving up a free base to Roberts.

Shields got out of the inning without giving up the run and earned the win after pitching six solid innings as the Royals beat the Yankees 2-1.
