British cyclist Mark Cavendish painfully crashes at Tour de France (Video)

British cyclist Mark Cavendish took the brunt of a brutal crash during the final stretch of Saturday's Stage One of the Tour de France.

Cavendish was leaning his head and left shoulder against Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans in an apparent attempt to clear some space for himself with just a few hundred yards remaining to reach the finish line. Unfortunately, the move completely backfired as Cavendish lost control and hit the deck, taking down Gerrans and a few other riders with him.

X-rays have since revealed that Cavendish has a separated right shoulder, and the injury could very well knock him out for the remainder of the Tour de France. The official announcement will be made Sunday morning.

UPDATE: Cavendish did get back onto his bike and managed to cross the finish line before he was taken to the hospital. However, on Sunday it was made official that Cavendish is out of the Tour de France.
