Why did Marlins players skip team charity event?

The Miami Marlins held their annual "Fish 'N Chips Casino Party" Thursday night, which is normally an opportunity for their fans a chance to interact with the team's current and former players as well as the coaches. Unfortunately, none of the players on the current Marlins roster showed up to this year's event.

Considering the admission charge for the big night was $100 for singles and $175 for couples and was specifically advertised as a chance to "rub elbows with your favorite Marlins players", this was definitely not a good look. (It should be noted that Marlins GM/manager Dan Jennings and other coaches did attend.)

On Friday, Marlins president David Samson said that although player attendance was "optional", several players were committed to attending the event but failed to show.

So why did the players skip out? One theory is that their absence was a form of protest against last weekend's firing of manager Mike Redmond. However, reliever Steve Cishek provided a simpler explanation: With the team going through a 7-game losing streak, players simply weren't in a mood to socialize.

Whatever the reason, we hope the Marlins front office makes it up to the fans who paid their hard-earned money to attend the charity event and clearly didn't get their money's worth.
