Soccer player throws himself off stretcher in blatant attempt to waste time (Video)

A Uruguayan soccer player threw himself off a stretcher while faking an injury in a flagrant attempt to waste time during the late stages of a Copa Sudamerica first round match.

Uruguayan club Juventud had beaten Bolivia’s Real Potosi 4-1 in the first leg, but found themselves against the ropes as Real Potosi scored two goals in the second leg to close the aggregate score to 4-3. In order to kill some clock to preserve the lead, Juventud forward Matias Alonso went down with a "cramp" in the 78th minute.

The medical cart came out, and staffers promptly tended to Alonso, loading him onto a stretcher. However, Alonso apparently felt things were moving too quickly and was desperate to waste even more time. As the medics lifted the stretcher from the ground, Alonso blatantly fell off of it, forcing them to start over. The shameless move drew the ire of his opponents and laughter from the crowd.

We've seen some embarrassing mishaps involving stretchers on the soccer field before, but this is the first time that the player has been at fault. We'll see if Alonso receives any discipline for his unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the end, Juventud held on to advance, and now faces Emelec of Ecuador in the next round.
