Jose Hernandez hits umpire in head with 98mph fastball (Video)

Miami Marlins starter Jose Hernandez hit the home plate umpire in the head with a 98 mph fastball in the first inning of Wednesday night's game against Detroit.

Hernandez was off with his location, as catcher J.T. Realmuto lined up for a pitch low and outside, but the pitch was a bit high and straight over the plate. Realmuto couldn't adjust his mitt in time to get his glove on the ball, and umpire Kerwin Danley didn't have time to react. The end result was the pitch hitting Danley at full speed on the top of his helmet.

Danley clearly got his bell run, as he staggered away from home plate and went down to a knee. Marlins medical staffers tended to him immediately, and fortunately Danley was able to stay in the game.

Fernandez went on to strike out 13 batters in 5 2/3 innings, but gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and took the loss as the Marlins lost to the Tigers 7-4.
