Eric Hosmer misplays infield popup, hands Astros walk-off victory (Video)

Eric Hosmer

San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer misjudged an infield popup in extra innings of Saturday night's game against Houston, handing the Astros a walk-off win.

With two outs in the bottom of the tenth of a scoreless game and pinch-runner Derek Fisher on second, Astros batter Alex Bregman hit a high 20-foot popup on the right side of the infield. Hosmer appeared to have a bead on it as he sprinted in towards home plate, but suddenly realized he had overran the ball. Fisher was running as Bregman made contact, so as the ball dropped behind Hosmer, Bregman crossed the plate and the Astros celebrated the 1-0 victory.

You certainly don't see that every day, at least in the major leagues. This will put some serious heat on Hosmer, who signed a large multi-million free agent contract with the Padres this past offseason. We'll see how he moves forward from this.
