Eric Hosmer's HR spills fan's beer: Should it have counted? (Video)

Padres fan spills beer during Eric Hosmer HR

San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer hit a home run that caused a fan to spill his beer during Friday night's game against Arizona.

In the fifth inning with the Diamondbacks leading 5-2, Hosmer hit a deep fly ball to left field. A fan in the front row reached forward and tried to catch the ball with his beer while D-backs outfielder tried to make the play. The end result was that the ball landed on the ground near the front row, while the fan lost half of his beer.

The question in our mind is: Should this home run have counted? From our vantage point, Jay had a play on the ball, but his glove was pushed out of the way by the fan. This would seem to be a clear-cut case of fan interference. However, the umpires disagreed. After a replay review, they allowed Hosmer's home run to stand.

As for the fan, while the replay review was taking place, he went to get a new beer.

In the end, the D-backs beat the Padres 9-4.
