Video: Iowa State Fans Rip Cy-Hawk Trophy Apart While Celebrating Win Over Iowa

The Iowa State Cyclones upset their cross-state rival Iowa Hawkeyes in triple overtime, 44-41. Afterwards, the Iowa State players grabbed the Cy-Hawk trophy and began to pass it around to the fans who stormed the field. However, as the fans were passing around the Cy-Hawk trophy to themselves, the trophy came apart into pieces.

Watch closely during the postgame interview with Iowa State head coach Paul Rhodes.  As the interview continued, the cameras switched to a shot of the crowd with the trophy (around the 1:05 mark in this video).  During that shot, the top of the Cy-Hawk trophy (the piece holding the football) becomes separated from the base of the trophy.

This left the crowd to pass around the two pieces of the trophy, which certainly allowed more fans the chance to touch the trophy, so it's not all bad.

Fortunately the current trophy design is only temporary (they had to come up with something for this year after the original trophy was so universally hated that it was completely scrapped).  After watching this, they should probably try to make next year's trophy a little stronger than this one.
