Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson scored a run all the way from second base on a wild pitch during Sunday's game at Camden Yards against Colorado.
It happened in the bottom of the eighth with one out and the Orioles leading 4-1. Henderson had reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar. With Orioles DH Tyler O'Neill at the plate, Rockies reliever Jaden Hill threw the 2-2 pitch way outside. It bounced in the batter's box and got past catcher Austin Nola as it bounced into the netting behind home plate.
Henderson easily advanced to third, but turned on the jets and sprinted towards home plate when he saw Nola was a bit slow in pursuing the ball and Hill was not covering home. Nola turned and was ready to throw to Hill at home plate, but Hill was unable to get there in time as Henderson slid across to extend the Orioles lead to 5-1.

Allowing a runner to score from second base is something that should never happen at the major league level. It is not the first time we have seen a runner score from second on a WP, but usually it is due to the catcher having trouble finding the ball or the ball bouncing far away from the plate. In this case, the run scored by Henderson seemed to come down to lack of awareness and hustle on the part of Nola and Hill. You can never assume that the runner will just stop at third base, as Henderson took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself.
With defensive miscues like this, tt should come as no surprise that the Rockies have the MLB's worst record at 27-78 after today's 5-1 loss to the Orioles.
