Adonai Mitchell celebrates TD prematurely, fumbles ball through end zone (Video)

Adonai Mitchell

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell committed a costly and unforgivable mistake that cost his team a touchdown during Sunday's NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams.

It happened a few minutes into the third quarter with the Rams leading 13-10. The Colts had 3rd and 4 on their own 24-yard line. Colts QB Daniel Jones took the shotgun snap and threw deep to Mitchell, who was covered closely by Rams cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. Mitchell caught it and made a great spin move to shake free of Forbes, giving himself a clear path to the end zone for a touchdown. Or so we thought.

Mitchell wanted to show off by holding the ball out in front of him with one hand as he crossed the end zone. Unfortunately, as he stuck the ball out before he reached the goal line, he lost his grip on the ball and it slipped out of his hand on the 1-yard line. The momentum from Mitchell's run caused the ball to roll through the back of the end zone for a touchback.

We have seen NFL players bungle scores by fumbling through the end zone through sloppy ball handling before, but this was completely preventable. If we were his coach, Mitchell would be sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. There's no reason for this nonsense.

As it turns out, Mitchell's blunder was the difference in the game as the Rams won 27-20, handing the Colts their first loss of the season.
