The New York Cosmos Are Back! (Almost)

Talk about a comeback years in the making.  After the North American Soccer League (NASL) folded in 1984, the New York Cosmos soccer team faded into history...until recently.  To take advantage of the soccer movement that is finally taking hold in the United States, a group of investors purchased the New York Cosmos name last year, and the New York Times reported that on August 1, 2010, it was officially announced that the New York Cosmos would be restarted, with the intention of joining Major League Soccer (MLS) in the near future.

According to ESPN.com's Leander Schaerlaeckens, the sticking point will be finding a stadium for the team.  One possible location was the Willets Point neighborhood in Queens, which is currently being redeveloped, not far from Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

However, here's what the New York Cosmos do have:
  • A nice looking web site
  • Legendary soccer superstar Pele, who played for the first incarnation of the New York Cosmos, as honorary chairman.
  • Support from the MLS commissioner to get a deal in place for a second New York area franchise.
With the recent success of the U.S. soccer team in international tournaments, such as the 2010 World Cup, if things fall into place, the New York Cosmos could become the ultimate comeback story.
