Video: Mike Fontenot Collides With Umpire While Attempting to Field Ground Ball

San Francisco Giants second baseman Mike Fontenot was knocked silly when he collided with second base umpire Bruce Dreckman while attempting to field a grounder in the first inning of yesterday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Second base umpire Bruce Dreckman had positioned himself on the edge of the infield before the play as the Diamondbacks had runners on second and third base. Diamondbacks batter Gerardo Parra hit a slow ground ball to the right of the pitcher's mound. Fontenot came in to play what seemed to be a routine grounder, but he didn't see Dreckman. As they collided, Fontenot fell to the ground and was knocked silly but Dreckman wasn't phased at all.

To add insult to injury, since the umpire is in play, the play counted as a single and both Diamondbacks runners scored. The Diamondbacks won the game 15-2 and the San Francisco Giants were eliminated from playoff contention, assuring that there will be a new World Series champion this year.
