SNL Classic: The Amazing Alexander, 'Much Better than Cats'

SNL: The Amazing Alexander
"I loved it. It was much better than Cats. I'm going to see it again and again."
You have likely heard someone say this phrase in conversation before, but have you ever wondered where it came from?

Well, this classic quote comes from a Saturday Night Live parody commercial promoting Broadway performances of "The Amazing Alexander", master hypnotist. Orignally aired during Season 12 on October 11, 1986, the sketch features cast member Jon Lovitz as The Amazing Alexander. The gag is that members of the audience attending the performances are hypnotized to see the show again and repeat this phrase after leaving the theater to attract more people to see the show, who will then be hypnotized to see the show again and tell more people about it, and so on. A brilliant promotional campaign, and a hilarious idea for an SNL sketch.

For the icing on the cake, the ad zooms in on Alexander's eye in an attempt to hypnotize viewers into calling Telecharge to buy tickets for the show. We would advise you to look away.

As an added bonus, we cannot confirm, but it seems that some of the audience members are celebrities, including MSNBC anchor/political commentator Lawrence O'Donnell, and...is that Betty White? You be the judge.
