Belgian soccer player given red card for diving...while being placed on a stretcher (Video)

In an amateur soccer player in Belgium, a player was given a red card by the referee for diving...as he was being placed on a stretcher to be carried off the field.

It happened over the weekend in a provincial league match between Templeuve and Quevy. Julien Lecomte was challenging an opponent for a header when his opponent elbowed him in the head, knocking him down.

Lecomte could not get back up and medical staff attended to him. However, as Lecomte was being placed on the stretcher to be removed from the field, the match referee gave Lecomte a red card for "diving". This decision looks even worse now as reports have surfaced that Lecomte had three displaced vertebrae and a concussion.

What basis did the referee have that Lecomte was faking an injury? Couldn't the ref have just waited until Lecomte was taken off the field? If Lecomte tried to get back on the field, like Erika from Brazil did in the 2011 Women's World Cup, then everyone would know that Lecomte was faking it and no one would have an issue with the ref penalizing him.

H/T 101 Great Goals.
