With one out and runners on second and third, Cardinals batter Matt Carpenter hit a high popup to short left field. Castro tracked down the ball and caught it, but then put his head down and took a second to relax, obviously thinking it was the third out of the inning. Castro's blunder gave Cardinals runner John Jay the extra step he needed as he tagged up at third base, and by the time Castro snapped out of it and made his throw to home, it was a little too late. After the actual third out of the inning, Cubs manager Dave Sveum immediately notified Castro that he was being taken out of the game. Cody Ransom took his spot in the lineup and played at third base, while Donnie Murphy moved over to shortstop from third. The Cubs lost the game 4-0.
