Will Nabil Fekir Push Real Betis Higher in the La Liga Rankings?

Real Betis BalompiƩ had been a very active club during the 2019-2020 pre-season, with a new coach, several new players, and a brand-new sponsorship contract. The moves had been attributed to the poor performance seen in the domestic league last season, as the club wants to aim for much better results.

Financial instability seems to be a problem of the past at Betis, now that the management had been able to make these significant changes. Just recently, the club had announced that a new partnership with the online trading company easymarkets.com had been signed, adding €2 million in revenue per year.

Nabil Fekir – the most important signing

Joan Rubi, the former Espanyol coach, is now leading the team, but it is the signing of Nabil Fekir who attracted the most attention. Bought from Lyon for €17.7 million the French attacking midfielder will be a key piece on the offensive side.

Versatile, extremely high-quality from a technical point of view, and able to both score and create goals, the 26-year old player had been part of the French national team, who managed to win the World Cup in 2018.

Having played almost 200 games in Ligue 1, the former Lyon captain had scored not less than 69 goals. His abilities on the ball mean that he’s a massive presence in the attacking half of the pitch, no matter what he’s doing. He ranked top 10 of Ligue 1 in the past season for dribbles per game, shots per game, and key passes per game, showing that he’s a complete attacking piece, necessary now that Giovani Lo Celso joined Tottenham.

According to a Real Betis statement, “with the arrival of Fekir, Real Betis acquire creativity, great technique, shooting ability and attacking edge” while Lyon, on the other hand, “thank Nabil for all he has brought to the club, for his professionalism and especially for his involvement in the professional group as team captain.”

The first match of the season saw Nabil Fekir with several opportunities to score a goal, but none ended on the back of the net. Although the match ended with a loss, expectations around him are very high and the entire attacking strategy should be based on his qualities. In the following game against Barcelona, he did open the scoring with a well-taken goal, however Betis ended up losing 5-2. Football is not a “one-man show” but individual performances can decide the faith of match and Nabil Fekir is the exact man who can make a difference for Real Betis in the tough matches that follow.
