Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen suffers horrifying crash at Tour of Poland, fights for life

A frightening scene played out at the finish line of the first stage of the Tour of Poland in the city of Katowice on Wednesday that resulted in a horrible crash that left Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen fighting for his life.

Jakobsen was riding along the edge of the straightaway on a downhill slope when fellow Dutch cyclist Dylan Groenewegen began to lean towards him as they approached the finish line. Jakobsen lost his balance and crashed through a security barrier, causing him to flip over and fall hard on the pavement.



According to Fox News, Jakobsen is currently in a coma after having five hours of surgery on his head and face after the crash.

UPDATE 8/7: As of Friday, according to the AP, Jakobsen is in good condition. He is responsive, breathing on his own, and is able to move his limbs. He sustained extensive bruises to his chest and will need physical therapy, but is expected to leave the hospital in two weeks. All things considered, that is excellent news.
