Tony DeAngelo punches Reese Johnson in groin during fight, Blackhawks vs. Hurricanes, 10/29/2021

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo punched Chicago Blackhawks center Reese Johnson in the groin during a fight in Friday night's NHL game at PNC Arena.

It happened in the third period with the Hurricanes holding a comfortable 6-2 lead. As the referee was dropping the puck for a face-off in the Blackhawks end, DeAngelo called out to Johnson, and they immediately dropped their sticks and gloves and skated towards center ice. Play was held as DeAngelo and Johnson squared off.

After each player threw a few blows to the head, with some landing, DeAngelo went to his knees and threw an uppercut to Johnson's crotch. The low blow slowed down Johnson and allowed DeAngelo to take him down to the ice. We hope Johnson was wearing a cup.

It was unclear what the fight was about or whether DeAngelo and Johnson have a history, but they sure let loose during this one. Both players were sent to the penalty box for 5 minutes each for fighting.

The fight completed the "Gordie Howe hat trick" for DeAngelo, as he scored a goal in the first period and had an assist in the second period to go along with that fight in the third.

The Hurricanes won the game 6-3 to extend their winning streak to 7 games to start the season. The Blackhawks remain winless on the season at 0-6-2 in what has been a horrible start to their season, both on and off the ice
