The Los Angeles Dodgers scored two runs on a bizarre play as the Colorado Rockies lost an infield popup in the rain during Wednesday night's game at Coors Field.
It happened in the top of the sixth with two outs and runners on second and third with the game still scoreless. A steady rain was beginning to fall and fans had begun heading for shelter inside the stadium concourse. On a 3-2 pitch, Dodgers batter Max Muncy hit a high popup between first and second towards the edge of the outfield grass. Rockies second baseman Thairo Estrada appeared to have a bead on it, with first baseman Michael Toglia deferring to Estrada on the play.
Suddenly, however, Estrada lost it in the rain, then began ducking for cover as he had no idea where the ball was. Toglia put his glove up, but he was watching Estrada, so he didn't know where the ball was, either. In the ball dropped less than five feet from where Toglia was standing. Muncy reached first safely, and both Dodgers runners came around to score to give them a 2-0 lead.

We have seen plenty of misplayed popups this year, but clearly the rain was a factor in this one. To add insult to injury, the umpires called a rain delay right after the play. If they had called it a minute sooner, the game would still be scoreless.
As no Rockies infielders touched the ball before it dropped, Muncy gets credit for a single and 2 RBI. Since five full innings have been played, this game will count regardless of whether they resume it or not. As of this writing, it is unclear whether the game will be resumed tonight or at a later date.
