Yankees infield allow popup to drop in awkward mishap vs. Padres (Video)

Yankees infield lets popup drop, Padres vs. Yankees, 5/5/2025

The New York Yankees infield allowed an easy popup to drop to the ground in an awkward mishap during Monday night's game against San Diego.

It happened in the top of the fourth inning with two outs and nobody on as the Yanks led 2-0. Padres batter Xander Bogaerts hit a high popup in between home plate and the pitcher's mound that appeared to be an easy play. Pitcher Carlos Rodon and catcher Austin Wells stood back waiting for someone else to get it. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt and third baseman Oswald Peraza both ran in to catch it, then appeared to stop to let the other one get it. In the end, no one was under the ball as it dropped to the ground, and Bogaerts ended up with an infield single.

It is mind-boggling that a play like this can happen in the major leagues, but we have seen a lot of fielding misplays recently, especially in the outfield.

Rodon was able to get the next batter out on a fielder's choice, so the misplay didn't come back to bite the Yanks. Still, it was embarrassing and inexcusable to see that happen.
