‘Sacred Heart Has Diarrhea’ picked up on ESPNU hot mic during MAAC men's lacrosse final (Video)

Ref announces penalty, Sacred Heart vs. Siena, MAAC mens lacrosse final, 5/3/2025

Saturday's ESPNU broadcast of the MAAC men's lacrosse final between Sacred Heart and Siena went off the rails a bit when a live crowd mic picked up someone saying "Sacred Heart has diarrhea".

It happened in the first minute of the fourth quarter with second-seeded Siena holding a 9-7 lead over Sacred Heart, the top seed and defending MAAC champion. The broadcast picked up the voice of what appeared to be a young man covering the game on a radio or podcast with a pro-Siena bias, saying "For those lucky enough to listen, Let's go Saints!"

After a few seconds of silence, that voice suddenly without warning made the unexpected statement "Sacred Heart has diarrhea."

As play stopped with 14:16 remaining in the game for the officials to announce a penalty on Siena which would put Sacred Heart at a man up, the same voice said "Lot of people saying Sacred Heart has diarrhea."

The main broadcaster apologized to viewers for the comment, blaming it on the "crowd mic". We would imagine that particular mic was turned off for the rest of the game. As we have seen recently, hot mics on live TV can capture some unexpected moments, and they are not always appropriate for all audiences. The network censors have to be more on top of things.

In the end, Siena beat Sacred Heart 12-8 to win the MAAC championship for the first time since 2014. It also gave them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
