NBA play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan used an ad read to mock US tariffs during Wednesday's Game 5 of the Western Conference first round playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and visiting Minnesota Timberwolves.
It happened with exactly eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 85 as T-Wolves power forward Julius Randle stepped up to the foul line to shoot two free throws. Harlan used the break in the action to read an ad for the NBA ID Playoff Challenge game in the NBA App, where players can earn badges, win prizes and get a chance to attend the NBA Draft. Since the contest is open to players in the US and Canada, Harlan couldn't help himself from making a political joke: "No tariffs involved!"
"Members in the US and Canada who complete the challenge have the chance at a trip to the NBA Draft. NO TARIFFS INVOLVED."

Harlan is a pro at turning unusual moments into hilarious calls, especially when a fan runs onto the field. He doesn't back off from making social commentary, once scolding a fan for eating during the national anthem. He also manages to stay cool under unexpected circumstances, like getting hit in the head with a basketball. Over the years, Harlan has proven himself to be one of the best.
As far as the game, the T-Wolves beat the Lakers 103-96 to win the series 4-1 and advance to the second round. Meanwhile, the Lakers season is now over.
