Marlins 1B Matt Mervis hit in groin by throw from shortstop (Video)

Matt Mervis hit in groin, Athletics vs. Rangers, 5/2/2025

Miami Marlins first baseman Matt Mervis suffered a painful moment during Friday night's game against the Athletics when a throw from shortstop bounced into his groin.

It happened in the top of the fifth inning with two outs and a runner on second with the A's leading 5-1. A's batter Luis Urias hit what appeared to be an easy grounder to shortstop Xavier Edwards. However, the throw by Edwards to first was low and bounced in front of Mervis. The ball caught him a little off balance and he tried to backhand it, but he missed. As a result, the ball hit him right in the groin.

A's runner Seth Brown came around to score from second to extend their lead to 6-1. Edwards was charged with an error on the play. Meanwhile, Mervis was in obvious pain as the NBC Sports California television broadcast team described it best: "Mervis has failed the cup check here."

We have seen a lot of accidental groin shots in MLB recently under strange circumstances. These incidents just provide further evidence as to why baseball players should always wear their cup.

Mervis managed to stay in the game. However, the Marlins were unable to rally as they lost 6-1.
