New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso caused an unusual pitch clock violation due to being late to take the field to start an inning during Tuesday night's game against Pittsburgh.
It happened in the top of the sixth with no one on and nobody out with the Mets leading 1-0. Mets starter Kodai Senga was preparing to throw his first pitch to Pirates leadoff batter Joey Bart, but there was no first baseman on the field. Alonso came running out of the Mets dugout to cover first base, causing home plate umpire Brock Ballou to call time out.
After a brief delay for the umpire to discuss the peculiar situation among themselves, Ballou confirmed the pitch clock violation to the crowd, meaning Bart would start his at-bat with a 1-0 count.

Why was Alonso late to the field? We would guess that it was due to a bathroom break that ran long, but we cannot confirm. As we have seen before, chaos can ensue due to bathroom breaks. One MLB player was locked in a bathroom and couldn't get out a few years back.
Since the pitch clock was introduced in the 2023 season, we have seen a few strange pitch clock violations. Alonso himself struck out on a pitch clock violation, and now he has this on his resume.
Bart did not reach base in his at-bat, but the Pirates did knock Senga out of the game and score a run in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Mets took the lead again in the seventh and came away with the 2-1 win. The Mets have the best record in baseball, so Alonso and the Mets should get a good laugh out of this one.
