New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells was doubled up on the base path after losing track of the outs during Wednesday night's game against Tampa Bay.
It happened in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, Wells on first and the game tied at 3-3. Yankees batter Trent Grisham laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt towards third base to advance Wells to second. Rays third baseman Jose Caballero threw Grisham out at first, with Jonathan Aranda making a great scoop of the low throw for the second out of the inning.
Wells should have been the go-ahead run for the Yankees with two outs. Inexplicably, however, Wells starts walking towards the Yankees dugout, clearly thinking there were three outs. As a result, the Rays catch Wells in a rundown, with Aranda throwing to Brandon Lowe at second as Wells ran back towards first. Lowe threw the ball back to Aranda, who put the tag on Wells for the third out, sending the game into extra innings.

We have seen MLB players lose track of outs before, which alone is inexcusable at the professional level. However, the Yankees have a recent history of running the bases "like drunks" and have had more than their share of defensive miscues. Although they are still in position to make the playoffs, the Yankees really need to step things up if they want to make a run towards another World Series championship.
Fortunately, the Yankees were able to win the game 5-4 in 11 innings to get Wells off the hook. However, if the Yankees keep making mistakes like this, it will come back to bite them, much like it did in last year's World Series.
