Phillies misplay two fly balls in same inning vs. Giants

Phillies misplay two fly balls, Phillies vs. Giants, 7/7/2025

The Philadelphia Phillies embarrassed themselves by misplaying two fly balls in the same inning during Monday night's game in San Francisco.

It started in the bottom of the third with one out and nobody on as the Giants held a 1-0 lead. Giants batter Rafael Devers hit a fly ball to short right field. Second baseman Bryson Scott chased it from the infield while Nick Castellanos came in from right field. Scott appeared to be in position for the catch, but the ball drifted away from him on his way down. Scott then deferred to Castellanos, who was too far away to make the catch. The ball dropped for a base hit.

After getting the second out, Giants batter Matt Chapman hit a fly ball to deep center field. Center fielder JT Realmuto struggled to get a bead on it, first turning to his left, then back to his right. In the end, Realmuto dove and missed as the ball bounced on the warning track and over the outfield wall for a ground rule double.

This is not the first time the Phillies fielding issues have been on display this year. Although they are not the only team to have their share of fielding mishaps, you expect more from major leaguers who are paid a lot of money to play baseball.

The Phillies did manage to get the third out of the inning without giving up a run. In the end, however, they lost to the Giants 3-1.
