Miami (OH) coach Travis Steele pushes over speaker at halftime (Video)

Travis Steele knocks over speaker, Miami (OH) vs. Western Michigan, 2/27/2026

Miami (OH) RedHawks men's basketball coach Travis Steele pushed over a speaker in anger at halftime of Friday's MAC Conference game at Western Michigan.

The undefeated RedHawks were down 30-26 as the buzzer sounded to end the first half. Steele was angry and appeared to be frustrated with the officials, making some pointed comments to some of them as he was initially headed off the court. He apparently stepped over the line with one of his comments, at least according to one of the officials, who blew their whistle and called a technical foul on Steele.

Getting T'd up made Steele even more angry, causing him to turn around and scream at the official some more as members of his coaching staff held him back from getting too close. As he finally headed towards the locker room, he let loose with some more expletives and knocked over a speaker before heading into the tunnel towards the locker room.

We have seen plenty of temper tantrums by college basketball coaches over the years. We hate to see it as coaches are supposed to hold themselves to a higher standard of behavior. Not only do they set an example for their players, but they represent the school that they work for. It's not a good look to see coaches losing their temper like this.

Based on what we see here, and comparing this to other incidents, we are surprised that Steele was not ejected from the game. With regards to the speaker, we hope Western Michigan holds Steele responsible for any damages.

The technical foul awarded Western Michigan two foul shots to start the second half (they only made one of them). However, Steele's strategy to fire up his steam seemed to work, as the RedHawks came from behind and won the game 69-67 on a last-second layup to remain undefeated.
