Robert Hagg called for high sticking on bogus penalty call vs Islanders

Anders Lee hit in face with Brock Nelson high stick

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Robert Hagg was the victim of some horrendous officiating as the referees gave him a sham high sticking penalty during Saturday's game against the division rival New York Islanders.

It happened less than two minutes into the first period as Islanders left winger Anders Lee was accidentally whacked in the face by a high stick from teammate Brock Nelson. Lee came away with a bloody mouth, but was fortunate not to lose any teeth.

However, instead of sending Nelson to the penalty box, it was Hagg who received two minutes for high sticking. Hagg happened to be in between Lee and Nelson, but did not have his stick raised.

Head referee Kendrick Nicholson appeared to be in good position to see the play, so it is baffling to explain how he got the call completely wrong. Terrible job.

Hagg did get some measure of revenge by scoring the first goal of the game at the 6:39 mark of the first period, but the Flyers lost to the Islanders 4-2.
