Lakers ridiculed for missing playoffs with 'One Shining Moment' tribute

Los Angeles Lakers ridiculed in One Shining Moment video after missing 2021-22 NBA playoffs

The Los Angeles Lakers, considered NBA championship favorites heading into the 2021-22 NBA season, were eliminated from playoff contention after Tuesday night's loss to Phoenix.

The Lakers had already become an SNL punchline as they struggled in the second half of the season, but most fans still believed that they would at least finish in no worse than 10th place in the Western Conference to make it into the play-in round of the playoffs. Sadly, however, the Lakers fell into a losing streak at the worst possible time and got passed in the standings by the San Antonio Spurs, who got hot at just the right time. On Tuesday night, the Lakers loss to the Suns was their 7th straight defeat as they fell to 31-48 on the season. Meanwhile, the Spurs beat the Nuggets, clinching a spot in the play-in round with a record of 34-45 and eliminating the Lakers from the postseason.

The Lakers have had many embarrassing moments during the season that foreshadowed this pending disaster. From Russell Westbrook's extreme shooting struggles, to Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard scuffling on the bench during a timeout, to LeBron James making some inappropriate gestures and urging officials to have fans removed from the stands, it is an understatement to say that the Lakers season did not go as planned.

With that in mind, a Lakers fan created a video featuring many of these Lakers season "highlights" with a comedic twist: the backing track is "One Shining Moment", the song usually reserved for highlights of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This video sums things up pretty well. After a season like this, all Lakers fans can do is have a good laugh, move on with life and wait until next year.
