Brandon Baddock accidentally clocks referee in jaw during scrum (Video)

Brandon Baddock accidentally punches linesman in jaw, Wild vs. Stars, 9/29/2022
Minnesota Wild left winger Brandon Baddock accidentally punched a linesman in the jaw during a fight in Thursday's NHL preseason game in Dallas.

It happened about eight minutes into the first period with the game still scoreless. Baddock was in the middle of a fight with Stars defenseman Jerad Rosburg when linesman C.J. Murray stepped in to break it up. Baddock had the upper hand, having pulled Rosburg's jersey over his head so he couldn't see what was coming. Murray used his arm to cover Rosburg's head and protect him from getting hit while Baddock was throwing haymakers. As a result, one of Baddock's punches bounced off Murray's shoulder and into the side of his face.

Murray seemed to hang in there and shake it off after being drilled as one of the other referees helped to break things up.

Just goes to show you that these NHL referees are as tough as the players. In addition to breaking up fights, they have to be nimble while skating during live action on the ice, or they can easily get run over by one of the players.

Baddock received a five minute interference penalty and a game misconduct, leading to his ejection after just over a minute of ice time. Rosburg was given five minutes for fighting, but was allowed to return to the game after serving time in the box.
