Fan climbs backstop netting to retrieve Sal Frelick's bat (Video)

Fan climbs netting for bat, Brewers vs. Cubs, 6/19/2025

An excited and arguably overzealous fan climbed the backstop netting to grab the bat of Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Sal Frelick after his bat slipped from his grasp on a swing and a miss during Thursday's game at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

It happened in the top of the sixth inning with a runner on first and nobody out as the Brewers led 8-3. On the 1-0 pitch, Cubs reliever Chris Flexen threw a 92 mph fastball right down the middle of the plate. Frelick swung and missed for strike one, and his bat slipped out of his hands and became logged about 10 feet high in the netting behind home plate on the first base side.

The bat was going to have to be retrieved at some point, but a fan standing in the front row took it upon himself to get it. He displayed some Spider-man skills as he climbed up a couple of steps and reached up to pull the bat out of the netting. We would guess that the fan had to give the bat up, but we hope the Brewers made a decent trade with him.

The backstop netting likely saved a fan from being hurt from the flying bat. These days, the only fans behind home plate that have something to worry about are the ones in the front row that put their beer on the railing.

As far as Frelick's at-bat, he worked the count to 3-2, then lined out to Flexen for an out. Frelick did manage to hit a single in the ninth inning to salvage a rough day at the plate as he finished 1-for-5. The Brewers hung on to win the game 8-7.
