Ronny Henriquez mistakenly believes inning is over after recording one out (Video)

Ronny Henriquez walks off mound after first out, Marlins vs. Nationals, 6/14/2025

Miami Marlins pitcher Ronny Henriquez looked a bit silly during Saturday's game in Washington when he thought the inning was over after recording the first out of the inning.

Henriquez came in to the game in the bottom of the second inning with a runner on first and nobody out with the game still scoreless. After giving up an infield single, Henriquez worked the count on Nationals batter Josh Bell to 3-2, then struck him out looking on an 86 mph slider for the first out of the inning.

Henriquez was apparently so focused on getting Bell out that he totally lost track of the outs, given that he walked off the mound and began heading for the dugout as if Bell was the third out and the inning was over. Catcher Agustin Ramirez appeared to get the attention of Henriquez and got him to realize that he still needed to get two more outs.

It is amazing to see this happen at the major league level. We have seen many players lose track of outs after recording the second out of the inning. This was arguably worse as it wasn't even the second out of the inning. It was only the FIRST out. What was Henriquez thinking?

As luck would have it, Henriquez wasn't even able to make it out of the second inning. After fielding a groundout which allowed runners to advance to second and third, Henriquez walked a batter to load the bases and walked another to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Henriquez was removed from the game after that, finishing with 2/3 of an inning pitched while giving up one hit and recording two walks and that strikeout. The run he gave up was charged to starter Cade Gibson.

Fortunately, the Marlins tied the game in the top of the third and took a lead in the sixth, so Henriquez doesn't have to feel guilty. Hopefully next time, however, he will pay more attention to the number of outs in the inning.
