Brazilian player injures self with “Siu” goal celebration

In Copa Paulista soccer action from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Gremio Prudente forward Kelsey injured himself while celebrating the equalizing goal during Wednesday's match against Monte Azul.

It happened in the 78th minute after Kelsey sent a penalty shot past the Monte Azul goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1. Kelsey was attempting the trademark "Siu" celebration made famous by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. That involves a jump in the air with a 360 degree spin and landing with arms extended forward. Kelsey seemed to land with one foot before the other, apparently putting too much stress on that leg which immediately caused him to buckle and fall to the ground in obvious pain.

We have seen athletes injure themselves while celebrating in unusual ways. However, this is not the first time we have seen an athlete injured with the Siu celebration. That move is a bit risky as it involves leaving the ground, and if you don't land right, as was the case with Kelsey, you risk serious injury. Our recommendation for athletes is to stay on the ground while celebrating.

No word yet as to the seriousness of Kelsey's injury. We hope Kelsey is OK.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing Gremio Prudente to remain on top of the first round Group 1 standings with 9 points (2 wins, 3 draws), one point ahead of Monte Azul with 8 points (2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss).
