Virginia Tech guard Michael Collins Jr. accidentally punches opponent in throat (Video)

VT guard Michael Collins Jr. punches Duke center Kyle Filipowski in throat, Duke vs. VT, 1/23/2023
Virginia Tech freshman guard Michael Collins Jr. accidentally punched an opposing player in the throat during Monday night's ACC men's basketball game against Duke.

It happened as Collins drained a go-ahead jumper from the free-throw line with 14 seconds left to give the Hokies a 77-75 lead. Collins turned and threw a celebratory fist punch, but did not realize that Duke freshman center Kyle Filipowski happened to be standing there. As a result, Collins hit Filipowski with his fist - in the throat, no less.

Amazingly, Collins was not called for a foul. Granted it was not intentional, but it was careless and could have caused serious injury. Hopefully Collins will have more awareness the next time he wants to celebrate...or maybe he should wait until the game is over.

Virginia Tech held on for the 78-75 victory. Filipowski led Duke with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Collins had 6 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
