Anthony Volpe, Trent Grisham misplay short fly ball vs. Padres (Video)

Anthony Volpe drops short fly ball, Padres vs. Yankees, 5/6/2025

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe and center fielder Trent Grisham allowed a short fly ball to drop during Tuesday night's game against San Diego, resulting in a single due to their miscommunication.

It happened in the top of the second with no outs and nobody on with the game scoreless. Padres batter Gavin Sheets hit a high fly ball to shallow center field and Volpe appeared to have a bead on it. However, Volpe suddenly stopped as if Wells had called for it, while Wells was jogging slow to give Volpe space to make the play. Volpe scrambled to get back under it but was unable to put himself back in position to catch it, resulting in the ball dropping to the ground.

Volpe is normally a reliable fielder, winning the Gold Golve as a rookie in 2023. However, if errors could be given to fielders for fly balls that dropped to the ground without anyone touching it, he would deserve this one. This comes just one day after an ugly play where the entire Yankees infield let a popup drop in between home plate and the pitcher's mound.

As luck would have it, Volpe caught a popup on the next play and the Padres hit into a double play to end the inning, so the dropped fly ball did not come back to hurt the Yanks. Still, it is painfully obvious that the Yankees need to step up their game when it comes to defense.
